ON MISSION | Can Anything Good Come from COVID?

by Al and Deb Warner, Set Free, Inc.

What comes to mind when you hear the word “COVID”?  Fear, uncertainty, isolation, economic hardship, limited church services?  Over thousands of years, God’s Church has faced and conquered every challenge.  As we listen to the Lord’s voice over the noise of the storm, can anything good come from COVID?

For us as the Executive Directors of Set Free, we are amazed at the new relationships God has forged as we have been forced and stretched to understand new technology.  These “old dogs” in our sixties are learning new tricks.  We even have our own Zoom call account!

Video conference calls have taken us from primarily a local Buffalo/Niagara-based ministry to regional, state-wide, national, and international relationships. Iron is sharpening iron between leaders not only in Jerusalem, but in Judea, Samaria, and across the world. We have virtually met and bonded with leaders that we probably never would have met apart from COVID.

“City Shifting” is setting a new paradigm for leaders who, under the guidance of the Holy Spirit, come together to design and implement plans for cooperative prayer, fasting, communication, and unity for the purpose of shifting their city into an openness toward evangelism and discipleship. As we cross-pollinate best practices for City Shifting with leaders from other cities, God is building His Church to bring light to the darkness. We are sharing testimonies, breakthroughs, challenges, fears, and frustrations. We are encouraging our peers and they are speaking life into us as we pioneer together through uncharted territory. A team of servant leaders is arising from Oslo, Norway to Hong Kong to Boulder, to Cincinnati to Charlotte, to NYC, to Buffalo and hundreds of other cities in between. His Church is speaking AS ONE!

Jesus focused on the Kingdom as He taught us to pray, “Thy kingdom come. Thy will be done on earth, as it is in heaven” (Matthew 6:10, KJV). We are all about building and strengthening His Kingdom. Could it be that even during an international pandemic, God is building His Kingdom?

May God give us eyes to see the signs of hope and life all around us.  May God continue to build His Kingdom as He connects leaders throughout the world using technology – even if we are stretched and stressed in the process.
