Sierra Leone: Mobile Clinic Impact

by Jericho Road Community Health Center

Abdul (not his real name) lives in Tombodu, one of our target villages where we regularly visit with our Adama Martha Memorial Community Health Center mobile medical unit. He’s uncertain of his birthday, but thinks he is about 25 years of age. He grew up as a Muslim, and he still lives with his family. He survives by doing manual agriculture work. Often he struggles to make it. Our medical team recently visited Tombodu and he sought treatment from our mobile clinic. He had a serious infection on his thumb. He had tried treating it with local herbs, but the infection only got worse. He then attempted to seek treatment from the local government clinic, but was unable to afford the cost and so he left without receiving any help.

Our medical team drained the abscess, properly dressed it, and provided antibiotics. They demonstrated the love of Jesus in their care for him. Since he had no money they treated him for free. On the following visit when the team returned to his village his infection was gone, and Abdul was praising God. He was so thankful for the medical help he had received. He stated, “Through your mission you are preaching the gospel and changing lives.”

Our mobile medical unit is expanding the reach of our health center and providing care to remote communities throughout Kono District. Without a four-wheel drive vehicle the roads to these communities would often be impassible especially during the rainy season. Many of the patients we care for on these trips would not otherwise have access to proper healthcare. We have four outreach locations that we visit twice a month. Through this outreach, our staff is fulfilling our mission of demonstrating Jesus’ unconditional love for the whole person.
